"evil desires" - do we take the time to consider this?
"corruption" - do we see what happens to us when we allow evil desires to take root in our life?
Corruption is a word in our society that isn't well received. If we say someone is "corrupt" it's an obvious bad thing - going to prison kind of bad thing! In the faith, it begins by allowing evil desires into our life. "Desires" is word that our society embraces - like give into your desires. This is where the conflict comes in for Believers today. We are told by our culture to give into your desires and be you - but that will lead to sinful corruption. So what do we do with that? We COVER IT UP! Corruption is only known about when it's "uncovered" or "discovered" by an authority.
I'm not sure I'm making sense right now ... it's snowing so I'm all messed up ... and thankful I hung my outside lights in the rain vs. the snow!
Bottomline: I'm tired of Believers walking around covering up the fact that they are being continually corrupted by their sinful desires! I'm tired of joining of them! Stop the corruption!
How? By getting to know Christ and acting more like Him and less like us!
"5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love."

Thursday : November 22 : 2 Thessalonians 3
Paul's request:
- the message of Christ spread rapidly (we usually keep it to ourselves)
- delivered from evil/wicked people (we can't easily determine this anymore)
- continue to do the work of the Lord (like stand firm in last chapter)
- Let the Lord direct your heart (we usually direct our own heart with logic)
Busybodies:
It's the one thing I hear all the time - and say quite frequently too. We all talk about how busy we are ... life is so busy ... life is so full ... going here, heading there. Busy, busy, busy ... doing what? It's not uncommon that at the end of my busy day, I can't tell you 5 things I accomplished! What's up with that. I'm working (the job never feels done) but telling you the tasks I accomplished can be tough at times.
I want to be more effective for Him. What am I doing today that will impact the Kingdom? What does God need me to do for His people today? How can I serve Him?
Paul's request:

Today's reading is a strange one. The last days stuff is really confusing to me but as I've mentioned before, I think we need to consider it more often and live with a more "eminent" coming of Christ - rather than some far off experience.
I love Paul's encouragement to "stand firm." I think that's a missing understanding in our faith journey. Hold on. Stick to it. Don't give up. Don't doubt. Trust.

Tuesday : November 20 : 2 Thessalonians 1
"... and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith." This verse challenges me to live for Him. I want HIS PURPOSE for my life to be fulfilled. That has been something that I've thought about some lately. Maybe it's that I'm blowing past 35 this March or something - but I'm thinking more about what "my purpose is" and what I'm doing for him.

Monday : November 19 : 1 Thessalonians 5
The end times (I've said before) can freak me out fairly quickly. There's not a ton that we know for sure. Will Christ return with fanfare or will he return in a more subtle way? Will I know for sure it's Him or will I be confused or deceived? That's just the tip of the iceberg of questions about it all. Paul says, however, "you aren't in the dark about these things, and you won't be surprised." That's good news - I'm confused about most of my life right now ...
Throughout history, Christianity has been a religion of "don'ts"
Here's a great list of things to do:
1) encourage one another
2) build each other up
3) honor your leaders/pastors
4) live in peace with each other
5) warn the lazy ones*
6) take care of the weak*
7) Be patient with everyone*
8) No paybacks (evil for evil) but do good
9) be joyful*
10) keep on praying (assuming that you do already)
11) no matter what, always be thankful
12) listen to the Holy Spirit*
13) test everything
14) hold on to what is good*
15) keep away from every kind of evil
What on that list needs attention or improvement for you? Mine are *-ed.

Friday : November 16 : 1 Thessalonians 4
The title of this section of scripture screams at me ... "Living to Please God!" I hope the text lives up to my expectation! I want to please God!
Interesting note that "holiness" is tied to (in Paul's writings) to the avoidance of sexual immorality and keeping your body under control. Hmmm....
"human rules" ... Paul says that anyone who chooses to ignore this call of holiness (by avoiding sexual immorality) isn't disobeying a human standard - but one from God. Isn't that true today!?! Our standards in society are so wacked out right now - really, there is no standard. So the church must be careful - we can't measure ourself against the world ... but against the standard that God has given to us.
I need to give this to my kids for a memory verse: "This should be your ambition: to live a quiet life, minding your own business." (11) haha
It's going to seem really crazy when Jesus returns ... free jet-packs!

Thursday : November 15 : 1 Thessalonians 3
What encourages you? In what do you find strength? Paul says in this chapter that the fresh report of the church in Thessalonica has rejuvenated his spirit and given him a renewed sence of joy. I'm not sure I know what gives me joy most days ... I seem very day to day lately. Moment by moment at times. Is that wrong? I wonder. I think I need to fix my eyes on others and be more committed to partnering with them to see their faith floursish - which in turn, would cause mine to floursih, too.
v12 : "may the Lord make your love grow and overflow" then v13 : "as a result, Christ will make your hearts strong, blameless and holy." I want those things (strength, blamelessness, holiness) and they all have their root in LOVE! I noticed today the role of the Lord in this ... He will make our love grow and He will make me holy because of it. What do I have to do? Perceive it and embrace the free gift He is offering.
Lord, make my love grow some today. I know it may not be in leaps and bounds ... but make it grow in just the right amount and in just the right way! Help me forgive. Help me forget. Help me perceive. Help me embrace! Your son, TB

Wednesday : November 15 : 1 Thessalonians 2
v. 4: "Our purpose is to please God, not people" -- this makes life challenging in the ministry at times. I've witnessed it from a distance more than personally (thank goodness) but I know my day is coming. This statement is a great foundation of life.
Heres a phrase that I was tripping up on in another letter that Paul wrote: "and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy." (12) Today, we like to say that no one is worthy (and there's truth to that, too) but Paul is making a case that we can live a live that God is proud of and, dare I say, drawn to. I want to be a spiritual giant. A man that others will come to with needs, worries and concerns. A person that people trust and admire because of my faith. I'm not sure this makes sense but I want to live a life that is considered worthy by God.
19-20 are true for most of us pastors. What give us joy (outside of our own families)? You - our congregations - those who have heard our words, and who are living them out. "You are our pride and joy!"

Okay ... I'm back at it!!
Happy birthday to my bride!!
Monday : November 12 : John 21
What a great chapter to reflect on! Jesus is like so sweet after the resurrection ... walking through walls, appearing to his friends out of no where ... I love it!
Peter (my ADHD friend) has a thing about staying in boats! Yesterday at church, we heard another great message on the story when Peter walked on water - this time, when he jumped out of the boat he swam ... both examples of a guy who isn't content to "talk" about faith - he puts it into action!!
Jesus must have recognized Peter's leadership qualities as he "reinstates" him back to the role of "rock" that the church will be built upon. V.15-17 are a great story of Jesus loving on his friend and reminding him that even though Peter denied even knowing Jesus 3 times - Jesus vowed his love to Peter 3 times in return ... asking for his life to serve God's people.
"The disciple whom Jesus loved" - the common thought is that it is John (the humble author of the Gospel letter).
Friday : November 9 : John 20
What a wonderful day this is! The day that the human race was given hope again. The day we began to understand all the Jesus spent his ministry sharing with his disciples!
Question: why is it that the first to find Jesus are ladies? As a man, I often feel that ladies are the ones who lead our church in many ways. They lead in worship (not just on the stage - but in the crowd, and by testimonies, and praying at the altar). They lead in volunteering and serving as teachers. It's not much different from the very first day of this church ... 3 ladies are taking the lead in serving Jesus (even though they think He's dead). Why can't men step up to the plate and lead our churches in these ways too > in how we worship, in how we serve, in how we teach ... etc.
Another connection I have with Peter ... he runs slow - must be a big fat boy ... I like him more and more!
"... to my Father, and your Father, my God and your God." (v17). What I love about how Jesus identifies His Heavenly father is that we seem like equals. Hard to imagine isn't it? I see Jesus as so far above - and He is - but he speaks as if there is no difference between us. I love it!
V30 tells us that Jesus did some more really cool things - but we don't get to know what they were ... I wonder ... John says that he has recorded what you need to know in order to believe ... so they must not have been all that cool, right? But I still wonder...
Thursday : November 8 : John 19
I'm just amazed how much we take these few hours for granted in Jesus' life. It was really brutal. Jesus, thank you for taking this punishment on my behalf. You shouldn't have. You should have made us be punished for what we deserve. You deserved none of this - yet you willingly took it. I couldn't have handled one verse of this chapter in my own life. And here am I today - taking my grace for granted. Complaining about anything and everything. Keeping Your love to myself. Not passionate enough about sharing it with others. Forgive me again, Jesus. You are wonderful!
Wednesday : November 7 : John 18
I read this chapter with our staff at our weekly staff meeting. I was awestruck by the power of Jesus' name - at it, the men who were after him fell to the ground! That's power!
I was amazed too that Jesus was never rude or self-seeking. Even after being hit it v. 22 he simply replied with great truth and compassion toward the hitter and himself. He just took it all with the same kind of grace He is able to offer us today!
Tuesday : November 6 : John 17
Thanks, Earl, for giving some great insight on this chapter at Tool Time this past Saturday. Chapters 16 & 17 are some of the most profound words of Jesus. Earlier in his ministry he taught us to pray using very few words ... now known as the Lord's Prayer ... but these two chapters are really the way He desires we pray today. With passion, being specific, and filled with love. Too often, we focus on the "give us our daily bread" but this prayer is focused completely on OTHERS!
It's a true conversation with His Father. It doesn't sound like a prayer - it doesn't have that tone. It sounds like Jesus is sitting down at a table with his Father and sharing about his life ... THAT'S HOW WE ARE TO PRAY!!
Monday : November 5 : John 16
v. 5 - 15 speak of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
1) He is sent by Jesus (7)
2) He will convict of us sin (8)
3) He will convict of us righteousness (8)
4) He will convince us of eternity (8)
5) He will guide us toward deeper truth (13)
6) He will work with the Son and for the Father (13-15)
Friday : November 2 : John 15
Pruning - I was outside on Saturday, clipping and mowing and raking ... getting my flowers and plants ready for the winter. It's a lot of work and I hope I did it right. I believe that cutting these flowers and plants back will produce a much healthier plant for next spring. Do I hate my plants? No way! I want them to flourish - but that's why I cut them now. For future growth!! In our own lives, we have to endure the same cutting. But it's for our good!
Producing fruit - If I had a peach tree and it didn't produce any peaches, I wouldn't keep it. Unfortunately, there are too many Christian trees around that aren't producing an fruit ... what will be done with trees and branches like that? Burn baby Burn!
Not of this world - Too often, we are focused on what we can see. If you are like me, what I can see is this world. If our focus is on this world, then we are missing the point that Jesus is making with his disciples - we have to see the big picture of eternity.
Thursday : November 1 : John 14
Thomas - we've known him as the doubter but I think he was the panic stricken one too! Jesus says "you know where I'm going ..." and Thomas pipes in ... "no, no we don't! we don't have a clue where you are going!" I hear shear panic!
Satisfaction ... Philip tells Jesus "Show us the Father and we'll be satisfied." You've spent 3 years with Jesus and you are still not satisfied? Help me not judge him, Lord!! Here's the raw truth, I'm hard to satisfy! Am I satisfied with my Jesus - my relationship with him, my dependence upon him?
The prince of the world that Jesus speaks of in v30 is obviously the devil. I find it fascinating that Jesus let's the devil feel like he's got the upper hand but the whole time, Jesus isn't subject to what's going on around (the betrayal, the beatings, and death). He is only obeying the Lord. The devil plays right into their hands ... How often do we feel that the devil is gaining the upper hand in our life? Could it be that it's all happening to bring glory to God and put in the place where He needs us most? Most likely!!
Wednesday : October 31 : John 13
Serving - we talk about that a lot around High Pointe. We couldn't function as a church without people who are willing to serve. But what I find most fascinating about this scene is not the server - Jesus - but who He is serving - his bone-headed followers. By this point, I'd want to tell them to get back to their boats ... I mean seriously, Jesus is going to build his church with these guys? Wow! That's the power of God right there! They come into this room and they fight for position, and sitting close to Jesus and the whole time, there was an opportunity to say "Look Jesus, I get it - watch me serve my brothers." I would have missed the chance too, no doubt. But Jesus didn't take the opportunity to lecture or even teach with words ... he stripped down to the form of a true servant and washed those nasty dirty feet! And without much complaining! Does Christ grumble while he's doing it? NOPE! He says instead, "Boys, you should do this from now on ... okay?" I for one would be complaining in my head and not very happy. HELP ME LORD!! I want to live like this ... taking everyday and DOING Christlike things!
Tuesday : October 30 : John 12
During the last week of His life, Jesus is experiencing small moments of blessings. He has been the blesser to this point and Mary blesses him with the anointing of his feet (again - ladies leading in the area of worship ... hmmm). I can see Judas' point from a human logic stand point. He makes sense. Save the perfume and use it for the mission or for the poor. But Jesus could see through the logic and see the heart. His heart was far from understanding the WILL OF GOD.
What does God see when He sees my heart? Our KIDstuf virtue right now is Uniqueness - and our theme for the week has been to not look at outward appearances but to see what God sees - the heart. At dinner tonight, I tried to help my kids see that everyone has something special inside and that we have to look hard to find it sometimes.
The triumphal entry amazes me ... from the highest of heights to the lowest of lows. What fuels the celebration? The buzz about Jesus bringing Lazarus back from the dead. (remember 11:4)
Monday : October 29 : John 11
Since I'm writing this in reverse order ... I going to point back to something above ... Thomas the panic comes on the scene again. We don't see him often but here he is again, knowing the Jesus is putting his life on the line by going back to Judea. I hear sarcasm in his voice when he proclaims "Let's go, too - and die with Jesus!" Others might see a brave man ... I'm reading between the lines of what I already know of him and think he was full of fear and panic and this was said in shear sarcasm. Maybe I'm wrong.
Friday : October 26 : John 10
Jesus: "My purpose is to give life in all its fullness." I read this and think the enemy has done a great job of fooling us to believe that a life with Jesus is just the opposite - it's boring, full of rules, no fun, etc. There couldn't be a bigger lie. Jesus gives life it's true purpose and meaning. Life is worth living with faith toward Jesus Christ!
He's a good shepherd - attentive, caring, strong and disciplined.
I see in this chapter too that Jesus presents himself as the Messiah to the Jewish leaders of the day - but because their hearts were hard toward accepting this - they couldn't believe. This missed the best thing their religion has ever known. Today, we present Jesus in front of our people. Jesus shows up on the scene every day. People are still missing him. Sad isn't it?
Thursday : October 25 : John 9
I just love the Gospel of John. I love the stories - more so than other Gospels and I'm not sure why. This blind man is so cool. Jesus uses his spit to make mud ... I've never spit enough to accomplish that feet. Then once the man is healed, he becomes a fantastic disciple - testifying about the truth and nothing but the truth. The best testimony recorded in the Bible: "I don't know whether he is a sinner. But I know this: I was blind, and now I see!" Outcomes can change our points of view. You might not know what to think about Jesus. You may have your doubts. But consider what is going on around you ... consider the change that is occurring in lives of people who are following him.
Wednesday : October 24 : John 8
Judgement - Jesus is caught in a situation where he is asked to judge a lady according to the old law. Essentially, Jesus concludes, "if you want to judge her - then go ahead. But only those without sin can start" ... no one could be found to start the stoning. We judge so quickly in our world today. We must stop it! I must stop it! Help me!!
GO AND SIN NO MORE! I'm tired of people concluding that sin isn't something that can be stopped. Jesus tells this women who's lifestyle was being with men to stop (essentially - change your whole life to avoid sin). We can't stop sinning because we don't want to make the difficult changes in our life that are required to avoid sin. So, we keep tripping over the same un-level ground! WHEN WILL WE LEARN?! Help me!!
Tuesday : October 23 : John 7
Living water - makes me think of the 7 Pillars of Health class I'm currently taking ... living food, purified water ... etc. Only Jesus contains the perfected substance we need to live!
Jesus always seems to bring a divided response. Some believe him to the be the Messiah, some a great prophet, others get tripped up in the fact of where he comes from and say it's not possible. Even the guards proclaim that something is special about Him. They are moved by his words, his compassion and the fact that they allow their hearts to connect with his message.

I'm just amazed how much we take these few hours for granted in Jesus' life. It was really brutal. Jesus, thank you for taking this punishment on my behalf. You shouldn't have. You should have made us be punished for what we deserve. You deserved none of this - yet you willingly took it. I couldn't have handled one verse of this chapter in my own life. And here am I today - taking my grace for granted. Complaining about anything and everything. Keeping Your love to myself. Not passionate enough about sharing it with others. Forgive me again, Jesus. You are wonderful!
Wednesday : November 7 : John 18
I read this chapter with our staff at our weekly staff meeting. I was awestruck by the power of Jesus' name - at it, the men who were after him fell to the ground! That's power!
I was amazed too that Jesus was never rude or self-seeking. Even after being hit it v. 22 he simply replied with great truth and compassion toward the hitter and himself. He just took it all with the same kind of grace He is able to offer us today!
Tuesday : November 6 : John 17
Thanks, Earl, for giving some great insight on this chapter at Tool Time this past Saturday. Chapters 16 & 17 are some of the most profound words of Jesus. Earlier in his ministry he taught us to pray using very few words ... now known as the Lord's Prayer ... but these two chapters are really the way He desires we pray today. With passion, being specific, and filled with love. Too often, we focus on the "give us our daily bread" but this prayer is focused completely on OTHERS!
It's a true conversation with His Father. It doesn't sound like a prayer - it doesn't have that tone. It sounds like Jesus is sitting down at a table with his Father and sharing about his life ... THAT'S HOW WE ARE TO PRAY!!
Monday : November 5 : John 16
v. 5 - 15 speak of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
1) He is sent by Jesus (7)
2) He will convict of us sin (8)
3) He will convict of us righteousness (8)
4) He will convince us of eternity (8)
5) He will guide us toward deeper truth (13)
6) He will work with the Son and for the Father (13-15)
Friday : November 2 : John 15
Pruning - I was outside on Saturday, clipping and mowing and raking ... getting my flowers and plants ready for the winter. It's a lot of work and I hope I did it right. I believe that cutting these flowers and plants back will produce a much healthier plant for next spring. Do I hate my plants? No way! I want them to flourish - but that's why I cut them now. For future growth!! In our own lives, we have to endure the same cutting. But it's for our good!
Producing fruit - If I had a peach tree and it didn't produce any peaches, I wouldn't keep it. Unfortunately, there are too many Christian trees around that aren't producing an fruit ... what will be done with trees and branches like that? Burn baby Burn!
Not of this world - Too often, we are focused on what we can see. If you are like me, what I can see is this world. If our focus is on this world, then we are missing the point that Jesus is making with his disciples - we have to see the big picture of eternity.
Thursday : November 1 : John 14
Thomas - we've known him as the doubter but I think he was the panic stricken one too! Jesus says "you know where I'm going ..." and Thomas pipes in ... "no, no we don't! we don't have a clue where you are going!" I hear shear panic!
Satisfaction ... Philip tells Jesus "Show us the Father and we'll be satisfied." You've spent 3 years with Jesus and you are still not satisfied? Help me not judge him, Lord!! Here's the raw truth, I'm hard to satisfy! Am I satisfied with my Jesus - my relationship with him, my dependence upon him?
The prince of the world that Jesus speaks of in v30 is obviously the devil. I find it fascinating that Jesus let's the devil feel like he's got the upper hand but the whole time, Jesus isn't subject to what's going on around (the betrayal, the beatings, and death). He is only obeying the Lord. The devil plays right into their hands ... How often do we feel that the devil is gaining the upper hand in our life? Could it be that it's all happening to bring glory to God and put in the place where He needs us most? Most likely!!
Wednesday : October 31 : John 13
Serving - we talk about that a lot around High Pointe. We couldn't function as a church without people who are willing to serve. But what I find most fascinating about this scene is not the server - Jesus - but who He is serving - his bone-headed followers. By this point, I'd want to tell them to get back to their boats ... I mean seriously, Jesus is going to build his church with these guys? Wow! That's the power of God right there! They come into this room and they fight for position, and sitting close to Jesus and the whole time, there was an opportunity to say "Look Jesus, I get it - watch me serve my brothers." I would have missed the chance too, no doubt. But Jesus didn't take the opportunity to lecture or even teach with words ... he stripped down to the form of a true servant and washed those nasty dirty feet! And without much complaining! Does Christ grumble while he's doing it? NOPE! He says instead, "Boys, you should do this from now on ... okay?" I for one would be complaining in my head and not very happy. HELP ME LORD!! I want to live like this ... taking everyday and DOING Christlike things!
Tuesday : October 30 : John 12
During the last week of His life, Jesus is experiencing small moments of blessings. He has been the blesser to this point and Mary blesses him with the anointing of his feet (again - ladies leading in the area of worship ... hmmm). I can see Judas' point from a human logic stand point. He makes sense. Save the perfume and use it for the mission or for the poor. But Jesus could see through the logic and see the heart. His heart was far from understanding the WILL OF GOD.
What does God see when He sees my heart? Our KIDstuf virtue right now is Uniqueness - and our theme for the week has been to not look at outward appearances but to see what God sees - the heart. At dinner tonight, I tried to help my kids see that everyone has something special inside and that we have to look hard to find it sometimes.
The triumphal entry amazes me ... from the highest of heights to the lowest of lows. What fuels the celebration? The buzz about Jesus bringing Lazarus back from the dead. (remember 11:4)
Monday : October 29 : John 11
Since I'm writing this in reverse order ... I going to point back to something above ... Thomas the panic comes on the scene again. We don't see him often but here he is again, knowing the Jesus is putting his life on the line by going back to Judea. I hear sarcasm in his voice when he proclaims "Let's go, too - and die with Jesus!" Others might see a brave man ... I'm reading between the lines of what I already know of him and think he was full of fear and panic and this was said in shear sarcasm. Maybe I'm wrong.
Friday : October 26 : John 10
Jesus: "My purpose is to give life in all its fullness." I read this and think the enemy has done a great job of fooling us to believe that a life with Jesus is just the opposite - it's boring, full of rules, no fun, etc. There couldn't be a bigger lie. Jesus gives life it's true purpose and meaning. Life is worth living with faith toward Jesus Christ!
He's a good shepherd - attentive, caring, strong and disciplined.
I see in this chapter too that Jesus presents himself as the Messiah to the Jewish leaders of the day - but because their hearts were hard toward accepting this - they couldn't believe. This missed the best thing their religion has ever known. Today, we present Jesus in front of our people. Jesus shows up on the scene every day. People are still missing him. Sad isn't it?
Thursday : October 25 : John 9
I just love the Gospel of John. I love the stories - more so than other Gospels and I'm not sure why. This blind man is so cool. Jesus uses his spit to make mud ... I've never spit enough to accomplish that feet. Then once the man is healed, he becomes a fantastic disciple - testifying about the truth and nothing but the truth. The best testimony recorded in the Bible: "I don't know whether he is a sinner. But I know this: I was blind, and now I see!" Outcomes can change our points of view. You might not know what to think about Jesus. You may have your doubts. But consider what is going on around you ... consider the change that is occurring in lives of people who are following him.
Wednesday : October 24 : John 8
Judgement - Jesus is caught in a situation where he is asked to judge a lady according to the old law. Essentially, Jesus concludes, "if you want to judge her - then go ahead. But only those without sin can start" ... no one could be found to start the stoning. We judge so quickly in our world today. We must stop it! I must stop it! Help me!!
GO AND SIN NO MORE! I'm tired of people concluding that sin isn't something that can be stopped. Jesus tells this women who's lifestyle was being with men to stop (essentially - change your whole life to avoid sin). We can't stop sinning because we don't want to make the difficult changes in our life that are required to avoid sin. So, we keep tripping over the same un-level ground! WHEN WILL WE LEARN?! Help me!!
Tuesday : October 23 : John 7
Living water - makes me think of the 7 Pillars of Health class I'm currently taking ... living food, purified water ... etc. Only Jesus contains the perfected substance we need to live!
Jesus always seems to bring a divided response. Some believe him to the be the Messiah, some a great prophet, others get tripped up in the fact of where he comes from and say it's not possible. Even the guards proclaim that something is special about Him. They are moved by his words, his compassion and the fact that they allow their hearts to connect with his message.

Monday :: October 22 :: John 6
Had the great priviledge to read this chapter with my wife ... thanks Tammy!
This is also one of my favorite chapters of my favorite Gospels.
Outside of healings and such, Jesus really takes the depth of His diety to a new level. Feeding 5,000+ with barely enough food for one small boy was amazing. Walking on the surface of the water - crazy cool. Now Jesus is the "new rage" and the paparazzi are after Him. He's followed across the lake and people are pressing him about leaving ... His response? He says, "you only care about this because of the cool miracles ... not because of the meaning behind them." Is that a great response. Fame isn't something men handle well. It builds our ego too quickly or something. The fame didn't even phase Christ - He understood its magnitude and its deception. "Search for eternal life," he said instead of getting wrapped up in these miraculous things.
60 Many of his disciples said, “This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?”
How true is this ... many people fall away from very sound teaching today because it's tough.
> It intrudes on their personal wants and desires
> It means that they can't have all the pleasures of the world
> It means that they have to serve and not be served
> It means that they have to put others before themselves
> It means that they have love their enemies instead of seek revenge upon them
> It means they see things from a different perspective than the rest of the world
> and this list could be really long!
Let's answer the question these followers asked of themselves this day ... "only by the grace of God are we able to understand any of this!" And I for one, need lots more of it!!

Friday :: October 19 :: John 5
I was caught by Jesus' approach to the man he healed in this chapter. What came to mind mind was that Jesus was most of the time approached by people who wanted him to do something. Like all the time - he is being asked to heal this person, touch that one ... give, give, give. But on this day, he looks at a man and asks, "Are you interested in getting better or do you like it begging here." (TB's paraphrase free of charge). I like seeing a proactive Lord who is willing to drag us out of our circumstances ... if we are wanting to get out of them.
[NLT] "38 and you do not have his message in your hearts, because you do not believe me—the one he sent to you. 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! 40 Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life."
I'm struck by the boldness again of Jesus to speak directly to the issues at hand. Here's a question to ponder ... is God in our heart in our "pre-conversion" condition or is His message placed there after our faith is placed in Him? Jesus tells these religious leaders: "because God's message isn't in your heart, you don't believe in me, His Son."

Thursday :: October 18 :: John 4
Here's one of my favorite moments in Jesus' ministry. I preached about it last Sunday. Why am I attracted to this story? I'm not sure. I think it's because I see Jesus love a sinner in such a way that they are drawn to Him. Do I do that? Can someone who is away from Christ be with me and since my love, my passion for them to be restored into God's Kingdom? Jesus has this great ability to speak the truth (which can hurt) but He pours on so much love and compassion that people are drawn to His words and are excited to be freed from their bondage!
A couple of observations:
1) this was a woman who had a limited understanding of God. She speaks about the Messiah and the proper way to worship - she knew right from wrong but was allowing sin to waste her life away. She was hungry for more than she currently understood. She was OPEN to God's love.
2) She was well connected with others like her. In v.28 she leaves her water and goes to town to tell her friends about Jesus. In v.39 we see that many believe in Jesus because of her testimony. She didn't keep this truth to herself - she wanted others to know it too. She loved others enough to tell them.
3) Her ministry was appreciated. You know, these people didn't trample over her anymore. They told her (v.42) that they were intrigued by what she said, but now believe because of what they have seen with their own eyes. Her integrity was restored - she was a member of society again!
Something I just noticed in the story of Jesus healing the "official's" son is that Jesus tells the official to leave because the healing has taken place but the father doesn't know the outcome for another day. 52: "When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour." Then the father realized that this was the exact time ast which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." We are so hungry for INSTANT gratification that we miss what the opportunity for what God is already at work doing. The father left (taking Jesus at his word) but didn't know until he inquired about the timing.
One last thing about this miracle. I've often thought that healing is a direct result of our faith. In other words, if we have enough faith - we can see the healing. Well in the story, the faith of the official comes AFTER the miracle. In v.53, it says "So he and his household believed." Did the miracle occur to give the man faith? Likely. But that flies in the face of my traditional understanding of God's healing touch. His miracles all have purpose - but it's likely not the purpose that we have in mind when we pray for them. Does that make sense? Something to ponder ....

Wednesday :: October 17 :: John 3
Happy Birthday to my pappy! 68 years old!
Jesus uses such great word analogies. Here he is telling Nicodemus about being "born again." This is a picture that we can all understand. We've all be born into this world ... now Jesus is speaking in those common ground terms regarding being born into the spiritual.
Nicodemus gets nailed with the "you are a leader but you don't understand what I'm saying" comment by Jesus. That had to hurt but I also think it challenged him to step up to the plate a little. Too often, I think we are afraid to speak truth to people because we are afraid of hurting their feelings. Jesus cuts right to the chase with his comments to people all the time. He does it with love and with concern for who they are - but he doesn't attempt to be PC at all! And what's coolest is that out of Nicodemus's question, comes one of our most beloved verses within the entire Bible in John 3:16.
Consider these different translations of the John 3:16-17:
NLT: “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him."
MESSAGE: "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again."
AMPLIFIED: For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten ([a]unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.
17For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge (to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on) the world, but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him.
CONTEMP. ENGLISH VER: "God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. 17God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them!"

I think if Corbin ever looks at Tammy and says, "Dear woman," she'd come uncorked! haha The last time we saw Mary, she was a timid but faithful teen aged mother-to-be. Now, 30 years later, she's a "know what she wants" confident mid-40 year old women. Don't mess with her!
Interesting observation: After his first miracle, the scriptures record that Jesus' disciples but their faith in him. (11). Isn't it funny that we have to see to believe. It appears to be the way that God made us.
I love to see Christ's anger in the temple. But his anger isn't about stuff that I get upset about. It's about his love for the Temple and God's Holy place. Tells me a couple of things ... God loves the church and he demands integrity (right motives).

I read a little bit about the purpose that the Apostle John wrote this Gospel account. It appears that from his language, he was appealing to both greeks and jews (in other words, to build up believers and to reach out to non-believers). This is great thinking for our churches as well. In what we do and in how we do it, we should be thinking about ways to build up AND reach out!
John had a great understanding of the privileges of walking with God. He understood the blessing of being called a "child of God." He saw the pain of our Lord first-hand as the only disciple present at the time of Jesus' crucifixion. He has seen the greatest example of holiness first hand - and he has seen what the world thinks of holiness first hand as well.
vv 26: John is questioned about why he baptizes if he admits that he is not the Christ, Elijah nor a prophet. His answer is a classic non-answer. He really never answers the question in my opinion. He is clear about his position in this process - he is nothing compared to the One and Only (18).
When John first sees Jesus, he speaks as if he doesn't know him at all. That's interesting from the standpoint that they are first cousins. It's not impossible but it's an interesting observation. There is also a glimpse into John's "pre-baptism ministry" when he says "the one who sent me to baptize ..." Was he mentored by someone? Did an angel visit him? Did God the Father tell him? Makes me wonder.
John the Baptist loses two disciples the next day. One of them is Andrew but the other isn't identified (from what I can tell). Andrew tells his brother Simon (called Peter after meeting Jesus) and then Jesus calls Philip who then gets his brother named Nathanael. All four of these guys are from one town - Bethsaida. Seeing how Jesus calls these members of the same family makes me think about how somethings operate in our world - you know in getting a job or anything - it's not in what you know but it's in WHO you know. Seems that Jesus even understood this principle and used it.

When John first sees Jesus, he speaks as if he doesn't know him at all. That's interesting from the standpoint that they are first cousins. It's not impossible but it's an interesting observation. There is also a glimpse into John's "pre-baptism ministry" when he says "the one who sent me to baptize ..." Was he mentored by someone? Did an angel visit him? Did God the Father tell him? Makes me wonder.
John the Baptist loses two disciples the next day. One of them is Andrew but the other isn't identified (from what I can tell). Andrew tells his brother Simon (called Peter after meeting Jesus) and then Jesus calls Philip who then gets his brother named Nathanael. All four of these guys are from one town - Bethsaida. Seeing how Jesus calls these members of the same family makes me think about how somethings operate in our world - you know in getting a job or anything - it's not in what you know but it's in WHO you know. Seems that Jesus even understood this principle and used it.

Friday :: October 12 :: 1 Peter 5
I'm praying for my friend Jeff who has an important court hearing today. Lord, may your will be done.
vv1-4 are great for us pastors: "be shepherds of the GOD's flock (not mine), serve because you are willing, not lording over them - but be examples before them." Great job description for me!
vv6-11 are great for everyone and worthy of memorization: "be humble, give God your anxious thoughts, be self-controlled, stand firm - resist the noise of the devil, God will restore you and make you strong."
I love the imagery of the devil being a lion. Do you know how lions hunt? The male flanks their prey by going out and roaring ... this obviously scares the prey and causes them to flee from the area. But what they don't know is the female lions are crouched nearby so the prey will run right into them. The male lion literally scares the prey right into the hands of the female lion. She does the killing (and food prep).
In light of this, consider Peter's words about the devil. He is the male lion roaring - hoping that us (his prey) will run from him right into the unsuspecting traps that await for us. We are called by Peter (and by God) to stand firm in the face of the roar! Resist the temptations - stand firm in your faith - He will make you strong!

Thursday :: October 11 :: 1 Peter 4
My mind is on suffering today. Christ suffered a lot during his life - besides the obvious death on a cross issue - - He traveled around with no home (no place of security), his earthly family was a little bit of a mess (no dad and a mother who had a clear favorite no doubt brought some interesting dynamics), he was rejected by his very own creation too often, and he had the power of all the universe at his disposal but couldn't use it.
Peter reminds us today that having "it all" on earth really is an empty hope. Christ demonstrated that by having nothing spectacular while on Earth. He was clearly not bent on getting anywhere here ... he was focused on living for His Father's Kingdom and doing His Will. Are we that focused on the big picture? Or do we get frustrated with our current sufferings and cry foul?
Wierd Verse Alert: Remember that really wierd verse yesterday about Jesus preaching to the dead in Noah's day? (3:19-20) Look at v6 > "For this reason the gospel was preached eve to those who are now dead,k so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit." At first glance, I'm thinking Peter is really caught up in this idea of getting another chance after death ... but a little research helps me on this one. There was a strong belief that Christ was coming back (which He is) before the Believers would face death. That first century church was really convinced that His return was going to be days, not years and definitely not centuries. So, when there were Believers dying they started facing persecution about that. Peter is saying "even those who are now dead, were preached to and will be receiving their judgement. It's okay to die a Believer in Christ - He will still receive you." This was said to help those who were afraid to die without seeing Christ in the flesh. Make sense? Interesting for our day and age.
"If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God." (11)
Do your words represent what you think God would say? Are you ashamed of your words?
"If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength that God provides." (11)
Are you weary of serving in your own strength? Are you relying on God to renew you?

Wednesday :: October 10 :: 1 Peter 3
I had the great priviledge of reading our text today with our staff. I'll enjoy hearing the "hairy chins" take on the "weaker partner" comment.
The first major section of chapter 3 seems to fly in the face of modern thinking behind the roles of women - specifically wives. But culturally speaking, this is great news for women (back in the day). Women were seen (and today are still the same) as mere objects - possessions. But Peter is saying they have worth and value that comes not from their appearance or the outside but from much deeper - they have a soul! At the time of this writing, women were not treated like equally with men and many believed they were not worthy of the Kingdom of God. Peter is saying you are worth it! You have value! Stand tall and allow your inner beauty to shine! I think this is a great message for our young women today ... for my 6 year old daughter ... to cultivate a spirit within them that they are confident in who they are and not what they look like as much.
There is some great content in chapter 3 but then I get to this: "He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the art was being built." (19-20) Huh? You can image I pulled out the smart people book to help me understand this one and ... it didn't help much. Some things have come to mind over this scripture:
1) Peter, the author of this letter, was with Christ for some extended time after his resurrection. This would lead me to believe that Jesus spoke about many more things but very few of these have been recorded. Is it possible that Jesus shared with Peter about what he did after his death (in the spirit) and before His resurrection took place? Did Jesus visit a "holding sell" for those who did not repent during Noah's day and preach about their need for salvation? Did he offer them a second chance in this moment?
2) Peter was the disciple who always got into trouble for talking ... I have always identified with that. Could it be that Peter is talking symbolically or just rambling on? If that were true, then we'd question the "holiness of scriptures" that feature authors who are not completely inspired by God to write these words ... and I don't want that debate!

Pet Peeve: Adults who walk around with bottles in their hands. Have you seen them? They bring their bottles with adult sized nipples into restaurants, food courts and offices. They don't eat anything - everything they want is in that bottle ... of course they've never tried anything else before to know the difference! Can you tell that I'm being silly now? I hope so. But that's what Peter is talking about in spiritual terms at the beginning of this chapter. "You must crave pure spiritual milk so that you can grow into the fullness of your salvation. Cry out for this nourishment as a baby cries for milk, now that you have had a taste of the Lord's kindness." (2-3) Is everything you want found in Christ? Or do you still desire the fruit of this world? I'm wanting to CRY OUT TO GOD TO GIVE ME PURE MILK! I'M HUNGRY FOR IT!
Is Jesus your cornerstone or your stumbling block? He will either hold you up, or trip you up. "They stumble because they do not listen to the God's Word or obey it." (8)
"Be careful how you live among your unbelieving neighbors." (12) or co-workers, or family members or friends. I'm really challenged by this lately. I know that our neighbors can bug the snot out of us ... mine mows to close to my trees ... this one let's his dog gain relief in my yard ... another hunts on my land ... this one parks his junk right by my back yard ... you know, there are some royal pains out there (Hoff - down boy) but the bottom line is "who are we?" Lord, grant me the patience required to obey Your Word and turn the other cheek and love those whom I find it hard to love!
This is great: "He personally carried away our sins in his own body on the cross so we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. You have been healed by his wounds!" (24)

I'll even start where I left off ... but you'll need to read this post from the bottom up ...
October 8 1 Peter 1
The roles of the Trinity are seen here: "God the Father chose you long ago, and the Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed Jesus Christ and are cleansed by his blood." (2) The Father is the team owner (calling the shots and organizing his team), the Son is manager (who is cleaning up our stink and serving our every need by sacrificing himself and being the perfect offering for us) and the Spirit is the coach (making us ready for great plays in the big games - making us HOLY). Sorry ... I'm watching Sportscenter and Monday Night Football.
vv7-8 speak of trials ... the purpose is found in this "So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world." How does my faith respond to trials?
The call is clear in this chapter ... we are to be HOLY PEOPLE. It's not an option! It's the desire and hope of God that His children look and act like Him ... we are to resemble our Heavenly Father and be HOLY PEOPLE.
October 5 3 John
"I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children live in the truth." (4) I ECHO JOHN'S THOUGHTS ABOUT MY OWN KIDS!
"I sent a brief letter to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the leader, does not acknowledge our authority." (9) Do you hear John's tone in that italics I placed here? That hit me between the eyes. I love to be the leader, too. I should really keep that in better perspective. Who has the final "authority" in my life? Am I living in a way that demonstrates that authority?
October 4 2 John
I get the picture in this letter that the church is established and has entered into another generation. The command to love is no longer new ... it's what we've had from the beginning. Once again we hear that loving God = obeying his commands.
I hear in this letter, too, that we can lose fellowship with God. John speaks of "wandering away" from this teaching. Wandering conjures pictures of not taking good care of the Truth, of not being diligent and consistent in the faith, etc. Can we wander away? Yes.
October 3 1 John 5
"For every child of God defeats this evil world by trusting Christ to give the victory." (4) My mind wonders: victory over what? Evil? Life? Big picture or little picture?
Confused? "And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God." (20)
October 2 1 John 4
(1) false prophets are everywhere in our world today. I was listening to Joel Olsteen (sp) on TV Sunday night and just thinking ... is this guy for real? Now I think he is being used by God but I also think (in hearing a very limited amount of his sermons) that he is another example of leading people into this thinking that a life in God is going to lead in worldly good. Friends, that can't be further from the real truth. A life in Christ will be the best thing ever - but not necessarily in this world and definitely not by this world's standards.
How will the world know we are legit and the Spirit lives in us? "But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love has been brought to full expression through us." (12)
October 1 1 John 3
"See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called his children, and we really are!" (1) Remember our heaven discuss above? "... and we can't even imagine what we will be like when Christ returns. But we do know that when he comes we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is." (2) This tells me there are questions even in John's mind about what entering Heaven will involve and what it will be like. Those questions will be blown away in an instant when our eyes will see the Truth in the flesh. That gets me excited!
John speaks often of "not sinning." "So if we continue to live in him, we won't sin either. But those who keep on sinning have never known Him or understood who he is." How do we stop sinning? There's a great debate about whether or not this is possible.
Dr. John Seaman spoke on Sunday (10-7) and clarified some of this for us at High Pointe: sin enters into our life when we willfully tell God "no." His example was great when he allowed his actions to get out of hand and treat someone else very poorly. Once the Lord showed him that those actions were not becoming a disciple, he promptly went and made that right - by apologizing and seeking forgiveness to everyone involved - the one he wronged and to those he wronged in front of. Now the point was this: his actions were not sin (regrettable and wrong no doubt) but because he responded to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they were not sin. They would have become sin in his life had the Holy Spirit revealed that to him and he did nothing about it. I'm not doing the illustration justice. Bottom line: are you obeying the leading of the Holy Spirit in your life - by making things right between you and another; by seeking forgiveness; by being aware of your actions and filtering them through the lens of righteousness??? That is how the CHILDREN OF GOD will live!
MEMORIZE THIS: "Dear Children, let us stop just saying we love each other; let us really show it by our actions." (18)
Sept 28 1 John 2
Remember that confidence issue earlier? "And how do we be sure that we belong to him? By obeying his commandments." (3) My good friend Mike is compiling a list of all the commandments that Jesus spoke of during his ministry as recorded in the Gospels ... that would be a great list to contemplate ... can't wait to see it.
Key words for me in this line of thinking ... grace, surrender, obedience, love, confidence, power
For those who think they worship the same God as me and who want to deny the DIETY of Christ ... "Anyone who denies the Son doesn't have the Father either. But anyone who confesses the Son has the Father also." (23)
Sept 27 1 John 1
In college, I had to translate this book from greek to english. I was terrible at it ... I still don't enjoy greek ... not one part of it ... other than I appreciate how perfectly deep and powerful it is ...
"We are writing these things so that our joy will be complete." (4) This makes me wonder, what gives me joy? What would make my joy complete? I can see John's desire to do something that would help someone else GROW closer to the Lord.
"If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong." (8-9) Great verses to commit to memory. He is faithful! Praise His name for His forgiving power.
Sept 26 Titus 3
Praise God for all He has done for us! I praise You with words that can't even begin to do justice to how much I appreciate SALVATION.
Sept 25 Titus 2
"And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching." (7) I'm drawn to that word "integrity." I'm amazed how that line of integrity can be so easily blurred today. Here's what makes integrity clear: live in self-control, with right conduct, and devotion to God. (12)
How would you grade yourself in those 3 areas?
Sept 24 Titus 1
Confidence. We can all have confidence in various things - most of are confident in what we do for work, or how we guide our family or how we play a sport. But very few Believers walk around beaming with confidence in our relationship with God. Consider this:
A confident Believer:
- thrives in sharing their faith journey with others (in love - not in bragging manipulation)
- understands the major concepts of God's plan for all of mankind
- is growing in their faith out of love for Christ - not out of shame or duty
- lives with a clear conscience and a positive approach to life
A non-confident Believer:
- shrinks for opportunities to share their faith or their personal story of God
- lacks much understanding of how God is at work in the world and in their life
- isn't growing in their faith because they aren't practicing spiritual disciplines
- lives with a miserable outlook on life and the church
Sept 21 2 Timothy 4
Do you ever wonder how you will leave this world and enter the next? I do. A lot! As a kid, I would get so focused on that kind of stuff I'd make myself sick. I still can if I'm not careful. Just think, we have ideas of the Heaven; we have people who have claimed to have died, hung out there for a while and then came back but was that real or just their mind snapping a few more dreams into their memory; seriously - that's what I wonder about.
So Paul is in bad shape. He's in prison and life is being squeezed from him. He concludes this leader like a man on borrowed time: "this jerk left me, this one stayed faithful, please come see me and bring so and so." He's wanting to be close to his disciples - those he loves and who love him in return. Pretty sweet image.

WARNING! WARNING! "They will act as if they are religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly." (5) Boy, it's not hard to find or imagine examples of this verse. Honestly, I've lived that verse more than I'd care to admit. How often do we all reject the power that is made available to us? Rejecting the Lord is a sure recipe for despair -
Did you know that the Jannes and Jambres spoken of in v8 are the names of the Egyptian magicians who challenged Moses by reproducing his miracles before Pharaoh? "Their minds were depraved, and their faith is counterfeit." (8) The power of the world - magicians, cult leaders, etc - it all seems real enough, but it is 100% counterfeit to the REAL THING!
Sept 19 2 Timothy 2
"Follow the Lord's rules for doing his work, just as an athlete either follows the rules or is disqualified and wins no prize. Hardworking farmers are the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. Think about what I am saying. The Lord will give you understanding in all these things." (5-7) First of all, v5 is amazing with the recent admission of Marion Jones doping in the Olympics ... no prize for you ... at least on earth ... but confession and living justly is now a worthy goal for her. I like, too, that Paul says, "think about this ... you'll get what I'm saying because the Lord will help you ... He will make it obvious." That to me puts an import emphasis on a couple of things:
1) study of God's Word is vitally important - you probably won't get it the first time through.
2) the Lord will reveal His Truth - it doesn't come from human logic but from divine inspiration
Sept 18 2 Timothy 1

(2) This tells me there are questions even in John's mind about what entering Heaven will involve and what it will be like. Those questions will be blown away in an instant when our eyes will see the Truth in the flesh. That gets me excited!
John speaks often of "not sinning." "So if we continue to live in him, we won't sin either. But those who keep on sinning have never known Him or understood who he is." How do we stop sinning? There's a great debate about whether or not this is possible.
Dr. John Seaman spoke on Sunday (10-7) and clarified some of this for us at High Pointe: sin enters into our life when we willfully tell God "no." His example was great when he allowed his actions to get out of hand and treat someone else very poorly. Once the Lord showed him that those actions were not becoming a disciple, he promptly went and made that right - by apologizing and seeking forgiveness to everyone involved - the one he wronged and to those he wronged in front of. Now the point was this: his actions were not sin (regrettable and wrong no doubt) but because he responded to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they were not sin. They would have become sin in his life had the Holy Spirit revealed that to him and he did nothing about it. I'm not doing the illustration justice. Bottom line: are you obeying the leading of the Holy Spirit in your life - by making things right between you and another; by seeking forgiveness; by being aware of your actions and filtering them through the lens of righteousness??? That is how the CHILDREN OF GOD will live!
MEMORIZE THIS: "Dear Children, let us stop just saying we love each other; let us really show it by our actions." (18)
Sept 28 1 John 2
Remember that confidence issue earlier? "And how do we be sure that we belong to him? By obeying his commandments." (3) My good friend Mike is compiling a list of all the commandments that Jesus spoke of during his ministry as recorded in the Gospels ... that would be a great list to contemplate ... can't wait to see it.
Key words for me in this line of thinking ... grace, surrender, obedience, love, confidence, power
For those who think they worship the same God as me and who want to deny the DIETY of Christ ... "Anyone who denies the Son doesn't have the Father either. But anyone who confesses the Son has the Father also." (23)
Sept 27 1 John 1
In college, I had to translate this book from greek to english. I was terrible at it ... I still don't enjoy greek ... not one part of it ... other than I appreciate how perfectly deep and powerful it is ...
"We are writing these things so that our joy will be complete." (4) This makes me wonder, what gives me joy? What would make my joy complete? I can see John's desire to do something that would help someone else GROW closer to the Lord.
"If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong." (8-9) Great verses to commit to memory. He is faithful! Praise His name for His forgiving power.
Sept 26 Titus 3
Praise God for all He has done for us! I praise You with words that can't even begin to do justice to how much I appreciate SALVATION.
Sept 25 Titus 2
"And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching." (7) I'm drawn to that word "integrity." I'm amazed how that line of integrity can be so easily blurred today. Here's what makes integrity clear: live in self-control, with right conduct, and devotion to God. (12)

Sept 24 Titus 1
Confidence. We can all have confidence in various things - most of are confident in what we do for work, or how we guide our family or how we play a sport. But very few Believers walk around beaming with confidence in our relationship with God. Consider this:
A confident Believer:
- thrives in sharing their faith journey with others (in love - not in bragging manipulation)
- understands the major concepts of God's plan for all of mankind
- is growing in their faith out of love for Christ - not out of shame or duty
- lives with a clear conscience and a positive approach to life
A non-confident Believer:
- shrinks for opportunities to share their faith or their personal story of God
- lacks much understanding of how God is at work in the world and in their life
- isn't growing in their faith because they aren't practicing spiritual disciplines
- lives with a miserable outlook on life and the church
Sept 21 2 Timothy 4
Do you ever wonder how you will leave this world and enter the next? I do. A lot! As a kid, I would get so focused on that kind of stuff I'd make myself sick. I still can if I'm not careful. Just think, we have ideas of the Heaven; we have people who have claimed to have died, hung out there for a while and then came back but was that real or just their mind snapping a few more dreams into their memory; seriously - that's what I wonder about.
So Paul is in bad shape. He's in prison and life is being squeezed from him. He concludes this leader like a man on borrowed time: "this jerk left me, this one stayed faithful, please come see me and bring so and so." He's wanting to be close to his disciples - those he loves and who love him in return. Pretty sweet image.
Sept 20 2 Timothy 3
WARNING! WARNING! "They will act as if they are religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly." (5) Boy, it's not hard to find or imagine examples of this verse. Honestly, I've lived that verse more than I'd care to admit. How often do we all reject the power that is made available to us? Rejecting the Lord is a sure recipe for despair -
Did you know that the Jannes and Jambres spoken of in v8 are the names of the Egyptian magicians who challenged Moses by reproducing his miracles before Pharaoh? "Their minds were depraved, and their faith is counterfeit." (8) The power of the world - magicians, cult leaders, etc - it all seems real enough, but it is 100% counterfeit to the REAL THING!
Sept 19 2 Timothy 2
"Follow the Lord's rules for doing his work, just as an athlete either follows the rules or is disqualified and wins no prize. Hardworking farmers are the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. Think about what I am saying. The Lord will give you understanding in all these things." (5-7) First of all, v5 is amazing with the recent admission of Marion Jones doping in the Olympics ... no prize for you ... at least on earth ... but confession and living justly is now a worthy goal for her. I like, too, that Paul says, "think about this ... you'll get what I'm saying because the Lord will help you ... He will make it obvious." That to me puts an import emphasis on a couple of things:
1) study of God's Word is vitally important - you probably won't get it the first time through.
2) the Lord will reveal His Truth - it doesn't come from human logic but from divine inspiration
Sept 18 2 Timothy 1
"It is God who saved us and chose us to live a holy life. He did this not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan long before the world began - to show his love and kindness through Christ Jesus." (9) This is worthy of memorization. So simple. So easy to get. Yet so profound!

Friday :: Sept 14 :: 1 Timothy 5
As I read vv3-4 my mind flashed by the Railside nursing home that I pass on my way to work every day. They are sponsoring an ice cream social for the community soon and I thought: isn't that sad that they have to feed us ice cream to even think about coming in their doors. I hate nursing homes. I hate their smell and they depress me. But I'm reading that "God is very pleased by this" in reference to taking care of the widows (and I'm made to think of the elderly too). Hmmm ...
Paul is putting much of the responsibility on taking care of this need (supporting widows) on the families and individuals ... the church is there for those who are absolutely without anyone! Interesting ... today's culture seems to make the church the FIRST stop for issues like this.
I LOVE V17: "Elders who do their work well should be paid well, especially thouse who work hard at both preaching and teaching." AMEN! haha
Timothy must have had many belly aches ... Paul's telling him to drink up (23) ... maybe I should take that advice ... hmmmmm

Okay ... I got a day behind ...
"last days" - that phrase has always intrigued me. When are the last days? Will we know? How? The disciples thought they were in the last days? Were they deceived? or just dumb?
"turn away" - this is tough. In our culture, there are significant numbers of people following some pretty strange teachings on Christian lifestyle. Makes me wonder about this "last days" stuff. If you've read "Velvet Elvis" or "Blue Like Jazz" you might know what I mean by this.
I love this: "Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next." I used to use this as my excuse to NOT exercise. The problem was that I wasn't exercising in spiritual ways at that point. Both areas have improved over the years.

Wednesday :: Sept 12 :: 1 Timothy 3
Good day so far: got up and ran 2 miles plus lifted some weights. Great fellowship with my new friend in the gym. Got home to help the kids get to school. Ran a little more with Tammy. Read our devotional together and prayed. Now reading God's Word. Nice! Thanks Lord!!
vv1-13 ... the leadership test. How do you measure up? How do I?
life cannot be spoken against ... I'm sure some would have issue with certain parts of my life but over all, I think I'm doing alright here.
faithful to his wife - absolutely
self-control ... with eating (could do better); with other things (doing really well these days)
live wisely ... this could be debated for quite some time.
good reputation ... I'm not sure I have one. Not sure I know my real reputation anyway ... don't we usually share how we feel about someone behind there back and not t their face?
enjoy guests in the home ... I enjoy it but we rarely have them. Too much cleaning to do. Tammy loves to have people in - I could go either way.
not a heavy drinker ... well I'm a little over weight and like to drink pop, sweet tea and chocolate milk. Is that what he's talking about?
violent ... hmmm - ya, doing fine
gentle ... as a butterfly (haha)
peace loving ... I don't hug trees but I don't like conflict
doesn't love money ... don't love it but I realize I need it. Trusting God on this one.
manage the family well ... okay, you just hit my weakness.
children respect him ... hmmm - I think so.
and obey him ... not likely. We work on this alot.
Now the conversation turns to "deacons". So, what's the difference between an elder and a deacon? ELDER: is refering to someone who is more like a pastor or bishop. The greek work can also be translated as "overseer" or manager. A DEACON is literally translated as one who serves. Their qualifications seem similar, but their responsibilities were much different - taking care of the work of the church.
I like this a lot too: "This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and support of the truth." The church is an important thing. It's not to be taken lightly. Our attendance and support of our church is critical in the developement and growth of our faith!

It's interesting that on this day (9/11) I'm reading about peace. Paul says we are to pray for government leaders (kings and others in authority over us) so that we can live in peace and quietness, in godliness and dignity. So much of those things have been stripped from us over these past 6 years. At least from Americans. We should be praying for our government - whether we trust them or not - whether we like them or not (I like Bush but I don't think I'm going to like the next president ... I still HAVE TO pray for them).
The point of conflict our world is in right now rests on our understanding of v.5 ... "For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and people. He is the man Christ Jesus." As Pastor Kip said on Sunday, there is only ONE WAY - and it's a path through Jesus Christ! No other God, no other method. Faith in Jesus!
I won't comment on Pauls words about women dressing modestly or how they are to be quiet in the church or how they are brought sin into the world or how they are going to be saved by having babies. You'll have to read that on your own ... comment at your own risk! haha

Monday :: Sept 10 :: 1 Timothy 1
Good day: woke up early to work out at BCHS, spent the day with Tammy, watched the Bengals sneak one away from the Ravens, and my fantasy team won it's first (and potentially only) game of the year. But the best moment of the day was reading Genesis 1 with Corbin at bedtime and responding to his question: "How do we know God did all of that since we don't have proof? How do we even know God is real?" It was a glimpse into his spiritual soul tonight. I had him read Hebrews 11:1 and share with him about FAITH. It was a great start. Thanks for that, Jesus!
Now to Pauls words to his young apprentice, Tim.
Right out of the gate, Paul let's Tim know how he feels about him ... "my true child in the faith." He also tells him what he needs to sustain his ministry ... "grace, mercy and peace." This past Sunday was a day I don't feel I exhibited much of any of those (at least on the inside). Paul says that these are gifts from God ... I need to start unwrapping them.
What is the answer for arguements within the church? "... that all the Christians would be filled with love that comes from a PURE HEART, A CLEAR CONSCIENCE, and SINCERE FAITH."
Are you a sinner? During commercials tonight, I flipped through the channels and Ch 8 was airing an old (and I mean old) broadcast of a Billy Graham crusade. He asked that same question. Paul admits in v16 that he was the worst of all sinners. If we ask people today, "are you a sinner?" most would be affended. But that's really where the cross works best ... when we realize that we are sinners ... even after conversion ... reminding ourselves that we are sinners. Billy Graham (a prophet of our age) responded with his own question by saying "I am. I am a sinner - saved by God's grace." When we remind ourselves that we are nothing but sinners - saved only by God - then the focus is off of us and back on the power of Christ ... right where it should be!
What does it mean to "turn them over to Satan"? I'm guessing here that Paul is referring to two men in the church who were saying one thing, but living totally different lives. In order for Paul to reveal this, he had to "kick them out of the church" or "turn them over to Satan" with the hope that they would return to their faith ... living with clear consciences and full of integrity. Otherwise, they would continue to blaspheme God ... something Paul was not interested in letting happen.
Should we deal that harshly with leaders in our church? Hmmm ...

Welcome to the weekend! I ran another 3 miles last night in the dark. That was weird.
V5 is very powerful. "Examine yourselves to see if your faith is really genuine. Test yourselves. If you cannot tell that Jesus Christ is among you, it means you have failed the test." My mind immediately went to Psalm 139 "O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me." Then later ... "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. Point out anything in me that offens you and lead me along the path of everlasting life." No one knows if your faith is genuine or not ... just YOU and the LORD. But, Paul makes a case that WE can know, too, by observing the POWER that is in your life.
Is the power of God evident in my life? Am I dependent upon that power?

What is the third heaven that Paul is speaking about? I just read one place where people think it may have been connected to the time when he was stoned in Lystra and thought to be dead. He was so convincing that the stoners drug him outside of the city to rot and for someone to bury him. He wasn't dead - he was badly beaten but he recovered, got up and went back into the very city that just tried to kill him (Acts 14:19-20). But why "the third heaven"? In Paul's day, there was a common understanding that heaven has several layers. One such thought was this: the first heaven was the earth's atmosphere (the sky), the second heaven was the stars (outer space) and the third heaven is where God dwelt (the heaven of heavens). Thought you wouldn't learn anything today?
"My power works best in your weakness" (v9) That's not something that many Christian leaders understand today very well (me included). I think it's true but my actions would tell me that His power works best in my strengths. I don't really want to use my weaknesses or even acknowledge I have them. Paul concludes that thought with "For when I am weak, then I am strong." Well said - now on to practicing that one ... now that's tougher.
Sarcasm rules again with Paul: "The only thing I didn't do, which I do in the other churches, was to become a burden to you. Please forgive me for this wrong!" That makes me chuckle.

Wednesday // Sept 5 :: 2 Corinthians 11
Ran 3 miles last night ... slept like a baby - it's like running zaps me of all energy for a while. I had a great chat with Jeff and Brennan while running (while I stopped to chat with them). I'm not sure about their faith position ...
V3 - Is a "pure and simple devotion to Christ" not enough? Paul's worried about people who believe everything they hear without screening that against the truth they've already been given. How true this is for us today ... we are like wind, being blown around by every new thought and trend that seems right - even though it could be completely wrong. We need to be committed to filtering everything against God's Word and against His Spirit's leading!
How much do I like v.6: "I may not be a trained speaker, but I know what I am talking about."
If Paul were alive today, the 21-century prophet would be a "rock star" - he'd have security guards, travel in an entourage, private jet and all. That's what most highly influential people are like today, right? Reading this list of things that Paul endured is amazing. To imagine how many times he should have died is scary ... but he survived them all - the shipwrecks, the beatings, stonings and cold nights. Believers today are so weak in their faith - me included - that we would have quit long ago if following Jesus looked like this. Paul's faith only got stronger. In the end, what does he boast about? The hundreds of churches he started? The thousands he's led to faith in Jesus? The numbers of babies he's baptized or dedicated? Nope - how many times he's cheated death in the name of Jesus. Wow!

V3 - Is a "pure and simple devotion to Christ" not enough? Paul's worried about people who believe everything they hear without screening that against the truth they've already been given. How true this is for us today ... we are like wind, being blown around by every new thought and trend that seems right - even though it could be completely wrong. We need to be committed to filtering everything against God's Word and against His Spirit's leading!
How much do I like v.6: "I may not be a trained speaker, but I know what I am talking about."
If Paul were alive today, the 21-century prophet would be a "rock star" - he'd have security guards, travel in an entourage, private jet and all. That's what most highly influential people are like today, right? Reading this list of things that Paul endured is amazing. To imagine how many times he should have died is scary ... but he survived them all - the shipwrecks, the beatings, stonings and cold nights. Believers today are so weak in their faith - me included - that we would have quit long ago if following Jesus looked like this. Paul's faith only got stronger. In the end, what does he boast about? The hundreds of churches he started? The thousands he's led to faith in Jesus? The numbers of babies he's baptized or dedicated? Nope - how many times he's cheated death in the name of Jesus. Wow!
Tuesday // Sept 4 :: 2 Corinthians 10
Paul gives us a glimpse of his humaness here - "some say I'm bod in my letters but timid as a person." I so identify. I can be bold in some ways and timid in others - when I ponder the Church and the Lord's ministry I think boldly - I even share thoughts and ideas about how things should be boldly ... but often when it comes to being active about that boldness, I feel timid and weak. That's my own doing - and it's not good.
I like that Paul is one that can sit back and see what needs to be done but then when it comes to being a friend, he stretches out the hand. (that's how I interpret what he he is saying here).
Paul is definately on the "offensive" in today's reading. We can understand this with our current state of war dominating our news and politics. Even the Iraq conflict is a "religious war" in my opinion - Muslims seem to have taken up "human plans and methods" while Paul urges Believers here to use "God's mighty weapons." It's with God's weapons that all things will be knocked down - and built back up. Monday // Sept. 3 :: 2 Corinthians 9
I think Paul has a "mother-in-law" sense of humor ... He spends some time today reminding the Corinthian Church about their promise to receive an offering for the Church in Jerusalem. He reminds them in the way a "m-i-l" might ... with the back door: "just to be sure you really are ready," "I don't want it to turn out I was wrong," "I would be humiliated," ... then he says, "But I want it to be a willing gift, not one given under pressure." I'm laughing - all that guilt before hand and then Paul says don't give under pressure! Boy do I identify with this! Maybe you don't get my humor!
Back to serious stuff: Paul is talking about giving generously. That's been tough lately. I never thought I'd be in my 30's and wondering about finances. I desire to give generously but I also worry a ton about living ... Paul says that we should be able to do both and I agree. Makes be think about ways we should cut back in order to give more ... hmmm
When we give, several things happen:
1 the need is met (v12)
2 the receipients will praise the Lord (v12)
3 the giver glorifies God by their actions (v13)
4 the giver will be prayed for by the receiver (v14)
== it all comes full circle within the Body of Christ!

Has "deep poverty" ever overflowed in "rich generosity" in your life? These are the New Living Trans words for v. 2. This church in Macedonia understood the root of joy is not living in comfort - I need to learn that.
v 8 - One way to "prove our love is real" is by looking at our wallet. That's true in dating, and in church-life. If we are willing to give sacrificially, it's likely because we are motivated by our love.
Would you pass the test? V. 22 speaks of a person who was selected to travel with Titus to the Corinthian church but only after he "had been thoroughly tested and has shown how earnest he is on many occassions." I'm wondering, would I pass that test? What did it involve? Was it by observation? What it based on knowledge of the scriptures? I would love a test today for everyone in the church - a "motives test" or "genuine believer" test would be great for me. I obviously lack faith. Another strike on my test.

Doesn't it feel good when someone compliments you? When they go out of their way to encourage you and express joy in you? Paul does that for the church in Corinth here ... "I have the highest confidence in you, and my pride in you is great. You have greatly encouraged me; you have made me happy despite all our troubles." (4)
"For God can use sorrow in our lives to help us turn away from sin and seek salvation." (10) THis is a tough pill to swallow.
Encourage someone today ... go out of your way to make someone else's day brighter!

Wednesday / Aug 29 :: 2 Corinthians 6
"Today is the day of salvation!" Access to God doesn't have to wait! It's available 24/7/365.
v7 : "God's power has been working in us." Has God been working in me? Can I see His hand in my life? I'm thankful that I can say 'yes.' It was great to feel God work through me on Sunday as I preached. I've felt a constant connection to God this week as I've been reading the scriptures and finishing "Experiencing God" book. That's a great read!
v.8-10 is sweet poetry to me. So encouraging. I will serve no matter what! Call me whatever you want, treat me however you want, believe whatever you want. My hope is found in my walk with the Lord!
Tough area to totally understand: v17> "Therefore, come out from them and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord." How can we effectively "walk across the room" if we are separated from them? I'm sure that Paul isn't saying don't lose connection with non-believers - he's so evangelical everywhere else in his writings. But I think he is saying, once we come to faith, we must be TRANSFORMED. We can't stay doing the same things.

New bodies: I wonder what our new bodies will be like. Will we be alien looking things? Will we all be good lookin? haha Will there be geeks there? haha
I like this: "So our aim is to please him always, whether we are here in this body or away from this body."
Our Life Purpose: "We are Christ's ambassadors, and God is using us to speak to you." This is what we should be about ... representing Christ to others: in our speech, in our work, in our leisure reading, in what we laugh at with others and in how we treat others.

Monday // Aug 27 :: 2 Corinthians 4
I'm struck by the first words of chapter 4 ... they tie right back to the end of chapter 3 which says, "As the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more." Then Pauls next words in chapter are "since God ... has given us this wonderful ministry, we never give up."
We never give up becoming more and more like Him.
We never give up turning from sin and wreckless living.
We never give up reaching out to others and reaching up to Him for mercy.
We never give up reflecting His image everyone around us.
I believe that our understanding of Christ's mercy is best seen when we realize that God is the one that has ALLOWED us to see it. Verses 3-6 show us that Satan is trying to block our view of Christ but it's the Lord who can take that "veil" away.
Renewal. Verse 16 says that even though our bodies are getting weaker, our spirit is being renewed everyday. I find this interesting because as I observe many who are aging in the faith, it seems they often become more synical and narrow focused. If our spirits are being renewed everyday, then our faith would only seem to get more and more refined as we age.
My body feels like it's getting older quicker. I ran 6 miles today. Furthest I've ever run in my life. Since the 5K I ran at the end of July, I've decided to run further distances. I've done 4 a couple times, and nearly 5 the other day. It was great running with Corbin, too. He parked his bike at the Sleepy Hollow pet cemetary (as they were burying a dog) and he ran from there to the M6 tunnel and back. He definately seems to enjoy running and I believe he is impressed by his old dad doing this. Some day he'll beat me at it ... I'll enjoy it while I have the upper hand. Tammy ran today, too. She's done really well with it. If we could get out more consistantly, I think it's something we could enjoy together.

August 22 Reading: 2 Corinthians 1
I've finished 1 Corinthians and back on track. I have a few chapters of Luke to hit but I'll get there in good time. Chapter 1 seems to be typical Paul - saying hello and catching up. I love Paul's dependence on God in times of struggle. I need to hear that. "You can be sure that the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ." (5)

Okay, my summer vacation is nearing an end. My Bible reading has taken it on the chin lately. I'll will complete this task of reading the NT this year. Catch up is really good but it will take some time.
I'm reviewing much of what I've read from 1 Corinthians today - this is a great book/letter.
2:1-9 > our world values wisdom but what does that mean really? I listen to talk radio and I watch the news networks ... wisdom doesn't seem to be very wise anymore.
3:9 > I was moved recently watching the dedication of the Billy Graham library. We have lots of church leaders today who sell books with their pictures on the cover, who get lot's of money to attend their seminars, etc .... but in Dr. Graham, we have a guy who just wants to be a mirror so that others don't see him they see the Lord. He said at this ceremony, "the one issue I have with this building is that it's too much Billy and not enough of the Lord." He understands his role - his partnership - with the Lord so perfectly.
4:4-5 > We are not the judge of people's faithfulness - but we try to be all the time. Help us stop. Help us be open and honest with our own motives. I want no secrets.
4:20 > For the kingdom of God is not just fancy talk; it is living by God's power. -- that's good.
5:6 > "if one person is allowed to go on sinning ..." This strikes something in me. The first century church was made up of Believers - salvation took place before people became a part of the church - evangelism wasn't an arm of the church, it's what the church did 6 days a week (so to speak). Today, our church exists to bring the sinners in. We should be going to the sinners and bringing the repentatent ones in ... makes me think.

Friday's Reading, June 29 Luke 3
John was one crazy, righteous dude. He spoke in great truth ... "live your life without taking anything from anyone one and love everyone around you." He spoke in judgement and in grace all at the same time. I wish I had his sense of boldness. His confidence in the Lord is inspiring. Can it be obtained? Or was it just for such a time as his?
Just Walk Across the Room reminds me that we MUST obey the Holy Spirit's promptings in order to fulfill His will for our lives. I want that desperately. John understood it well and lived it out. What he did was not in his own strength ... but in the Lord's. That IS available to all today!
Speak Lord - help me listen!

This amazing story leaves so many questions in my mind. Not questions that lead to doubt, but rather, questions of awe and wonder about this wonderful tale.
? Why did the Lord proclaim his favor to shepherds? - they were the scum of the town! they were on the bottom rung! It's awesome how Jesus enters to a angelic choir, and the front row seats were given to those who didn't deserve it ... if I could only grasp this, my understanding of my "undeservedness" would be some much more in focus.
? How did Simeon and Anna realize the Christ at 8 days old? The seeker (Simeon) and the worshipper (Anna) understood the magnitude of this baby better than anyone else did for the rest of his 33 year life. They gained this insight because of their walk with the Father and Holy Spirit.
? Where did Jesus sleep for 6 days? Even Christ was homeless. I've never been. I've never known that I would have a place (inside) to lay down, brush my teeth, and use the restroom. Never.
Thank you for coming, Lord Jesus!

"Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among us. They used the eyewitness reports circulating among us from the early disciples. Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I also have decided to write a careful account for you, most honorable Theophilus, so you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught."
These sound the words of a committed servant who wants to make sure that everything they write is 100% correct. That gives me some confidence in what I'm about to read. Interestingly enough, I found myself reading the accounts of John's and Jesus' birth more from the position of reading a newspaper than the Bible.
Thank you for coming Jesus. You first lived in Heaven, but you willingly came to Earth for me. I can't say thanks enough. I should say it more and more.

"And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people."
I read these verses and thought, "understanding often comes by putting things into action." I can't understand the joy of jumping on a trampoline but only watching others do it. I need to climb onboard - which I personally find more pain than joy on those ... Back to the point: if we are to understand the things of God, we must "put into action" this new found faith. Hearing about people "walking across the room" and living this faith out, puts wind in my sails (refreshes my heart)!!!
"I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while here in prison. Onesimus hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us. "
These few verses lead me to believe that the first century church had a problem in forgiving others. (sound familiar?) Onesimus must have been a typical A.D.D. kid who had burned all of his bridges. But, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit and Paul, he changed and became a useful tool for the Kingdom. THIS GIVES ME GREAT HOPE FOR YOU AND ME!! If Onesimus can change - so can we!
What about the change in me? It's still happening! Praise the Lord!

Monday's Reading, June 25 Colossians 4
"Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart" Last night, I woke up with a strange feeling ... an oppressive feeling actually. I really felt scared and wondered if there were strange things going on (spirit world kind of things). I know this might sound strange, but it was really weird. The phrase that caught my attention, "with an alert mind" reminded me of that experience last night.
Wouldn't you love to get your name in scripture. I wonder what it would have been like to have been on those "front lines" with Paul and the other apostles. Aristarchus must have been a strong believer - he was in jail with Paul. We've heard a lot about Barnabas but did you know that his cousin was in the ministry, too? His name was Mark. And this struck me too ... at the time Jesus lived, his name was pretty normal ... like John or Bill today, I guess. It didn't take long for people to realize the power of that name and stop using it for anyone. There is another Jesus mentioned here ... but they changed his name to clarify who they were speaking of.

The phrase that caught my attention, "with an alert mind" reminded me of that experience last night.
Wouldn't you love to get your name in scripture. I wonder what it would have been like to have been on those "front lines" with Paul and the other apostles. Aristarchus must have been a strong believer - he was in jail with Paul. We've heard a lot about Barnabas but did you know that his cousin was in the ministry, too? His name was Mark. And this struck me too ... at the time Jesus lived, his name was pretty normal ... like John or Bill today, I guess. It didn't take long for people to realize the power of that name and stop using it for anyone. There is another Jesus mentioned here ... but they changed his name to clarify who they were speaking of.
Friday's Reading, June 22 Colossians 3
Do you ever daydream? I used to all the time. I don't think I do that much of it anymore. Maybe I do and I'm not aware of it ... "Let heaven fill your thoughts." (v.2) If I were to dream, what would fill my thoughts? I don't believe I think about heaven enough.
This is how it's supposed to work: "... for you have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds. In its place you have clothed yourselves with a brand new nature that is continually being renewed as you learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within you." (v. 9-10)
How huge is this? >> "You must make allowance for each other's faults ... " (v.13) Honestly, I need lot's of spiritual help on this one. That's huge for me. Help me Jesus!

Thursday's Reading, June 21 Colossians 2
As I led worship yesterday, I was struck by the faces of our congregation. We were singing "Friend of God" and I was loving it! What a wonderful song with powerful words! After we were done, I had to comment on what I was seeing - 200 people who didn't seem very excited about being called "friend" to God. Can we really grasp it? I know it's a lot - but it really thrills me that God looks at Terry and sees me as his son ... his friend. I want believer to be thrilled by this concept.
Verse 2 says it well, "I want them to have full confidence because they have complete understanding of God's secret plan, which is Christ himself." I want the confidence of Christ to fill me - encourage me.
Another great life verse: "Let your roots grow down into him and draw up nourishment from him, so you will grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught." (v7)
I had a thought about v. 23: have you ever considered the Muslim and been inspired by their devotion? Don't get me wrong, I believe they are following a lie. But I consider their devotion with a sense of awe. Consider then these words ... "These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, humility, and severe bodily discipline. But they have no effect when it comes to conquering a person's evil thoughts and desires."

Wednesdays Reading June 20: Colossians 1
Paul starts this letter by saying "we have heard that you ..." Got me thinking ... what have others heard about me lately? Have I been making a difference in the Kingdom so that others have been talking? Would another brother or sister in Christ have any idea that my ministry even exists? The church in Colosse had been faithfull and loving enough that Paul and his ministry team had heard about it ... others were talking about it. Sweet - I want that! Not in a Varoocka way (Charlie and the Choc Factory... "I want a pony!") ... but in a holy way.
I want others to be inspired by my church's ministry. I want to do big things for Christ.
I love this phrasing of v6: "God's great kindness to sinners." Isn't that to true?!
I'll say it again : "God to give you a complete understanding ... be wise with spiritual wisdom ... learn to know God better and better." Paul tells every church - "you must be growing your faith and gaining more and more wisdom. Never stop learning!"
"I depend on Christ's mighty power that works within me." AMEN!!

Back to JOY :: Paul is so convinced that JOY is vital to the church that he even admits, "I never get tired of telling you this." Later in chapter 4, he says, "I'll say it again, REJOICE!" Corbin had to learn that verse for his part in our Kidz Praize Musical last month.
Paul pretty much takes any human element out of our salvation equation in this chapter. He says, "if there is anyone who deserves the best from God it was me ... but it's not through what I've done that I have this joy ... it's all because of Him."
"For God's way of making us right with himself depends on FAITH" (v. 9) So simple - yet so challenging! How is my faith today? Do I believe Him more - with an increasing faith?

Fridays Reading June 15: Philippians 2
This is still tough for the church today: "agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose." Lord why are there divisions in the church? Why can't we all get along perfectly? Why can't we see every situation the same way? I'm sure you have a plan ... but honestly, I'm sure want us to live better than we are. Help me to put away my own point of view and start living in harmony with all of your children.
One of my favorite areas of the scriptures: Phl 2.5-11!
I have felt this very much lately: "For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him." (v.13) Thank you Lord!!

Several times throughout Philippians, Pauls mentions the need for JOY in our lfe. (more about this in chapter 3 and 4). He is still using the language of "growing in your knowledge and understanding" as well as this need to be "live worthy of the Good News". Our lives are no longer our own! We must "work out our salvation" by: good deeds, saying no to sin, forcing our bodies to obey (disciplining them to follow God's path), etc.
This was a gut check: "some are preaching out oof jealousy and rivary. Both others preach about Christ with pure motives." (v15). Which side of that do I fall on? Do I preach because I want to be good at what I do, because I want to be admired, because I want preach better than anyone else? Or do I want to preach with pure motives ... so that Christ is received and glorified? Lord, beat me if I'm not serving you with pure motives today!
What a great life verse: " For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will always be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past, and that my life will always honor Christ, whether I live or die."
